In 2006, Anchorage’s Mountain View Neighborhood was federally designated a Weed & Seed Community. This designation signifies that Mountain View is committed to implementing the Weed & Seed strategy for neighborhood improvement – a strategy “that aims to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods across the country.” [1] This status also allows the Mountain View Neighborhood access to special Weed & Seed program funding from the US Department of Justice.
Anchorage Community Land Trust acts as the Mountain View Weed & Seed program’s fiscal agent, distributing funds to implement these strategies.
The “Weed” aspect of the strategy involves initiating programs that “weed out” violent and criminal elements in the community. Weed & Seed does this by providing assistance and funding to Mountain View Community Patrol and to Anchorage Police Department for extra police presence, police equipment and by working with the police to improve communication with Mountain View residents.
The “Seed” aspect of the strategy is accomplished by working with community-based organizations to “seed” needed community programs. Weed & Seed therefore provides money to several organizations, including: the Boys and Girls Club (so that Mountain View kids can participate in this program free of charge); Before School Program at Tyson Elementary; and contributes to the juvenile justice program of the community court system.
Through this approach, the Mountain View Neighborhood has seen a reduction in the crime rate.
